Hey @UntiltheEnd , I started learning Japanese a few months back so I think I can help you. There are a lot of paid courses online on how to learn the Japanese language by Japanese teachers, I have never enrolled in such classes and don’t know much about them, I tried my best to learn from free sources. Doulingo is imo the best app for beginners . It introduces you to the basics of the language and with some other basic words like water, food, this, that etc. Since Japanese is a vast language Duolingo isn’t enough to master it. Sooner or later you’ll have to look for books on the topic. Many are available for free online , I’ll send you the one that I have.

The tricky part comes in learning the Japanese scripts. The thing is that Japanese uses three scripts at the same time . Imagine capital, small and cursive letters to be all different and used at the same time. It’s hard to express this in English but once you start you’ll get what I mean. The scripts are hiragana katakana and kanji. While the first two are easy to learn , kanji is hard. Kanji is basically having a symbol for every other thing. This makes the language much harder to learn but learning kanji still is necessary as it is a part of the language too.

I suggest that you make notes as soon as you start otherwise all the knowledge that you learn will just be stored in your short term memory and drained completely out of your brain just after a few days. I started Japanese because of anime and I can tell you that watching it without subtitles is much more fun :))

Lastly, good luck trying to learn Japanese. It’s great that you are shifting your focus to other things to get rid of pmo. May you succeed in your task.
