Just do whatever you can do, give your best if not IIT you will end up in a NIT. First understand the fact that there are plenty of Engineering colleges, you become a software engineer after studying in any college. I agree the fact that there is a huge difference in quality of education, exposure to new ideas, having peers with outstanding abilities that you get in IIT.
If you are depressed you can’t focus on studies, find out the reason for your depression, try to resolve it. This is not to demotivat you, even i had faced the same issue that you are facing now. At that time I was not that mature enough to understand all these things.

Find out why do you want to go to iit in the first place. Is it for prestige, money, knowledge or to get ideas for your dream startup. Have a clear plan.
Have a routine plan for your studies, follow them sincerely. Think and work on things s that you can control, nothing else can be done.
If you still feel you need help, you can reach out to me, or any of your seniors or teachers.

Haha bro…I’ve been there.
Cutoff distractions in the first go.
Next, if you really want to be software engineer(probably, coding) then either dedicate to getting into IIT/NIT.
Or you just find another way to become software engg.

Nowadays, even BCA guys and even non tech degree guys are earning more than NIT/IIT ones. Even the current layoff thing has showed it.
I myself is an example who made it to the cybersec field with an arts degree(although I have left the field last year for a greater goal). I didnt get home NIT due to the 12th marks 75% criteria at that time for 0.6%.

So, refine your coding skills, learn from scratch rn.
JEE prep is indeed a slippery slope, if you fail on clearing concepts in 11th. Be serious, these are the foundational blocks for you.

See, most of the IT industry is in need of skilled persons. Specially, the emerging ones. IT Security is one of those where AI can fill the gaps but for lower level jobs only.

1st thing, make a twitter acc , connect with cybersec professionals.
2nd, Use THM/Hackthebox/etc to learn hacking. Use different courses(I preferred TCM-sec then) to learn basics and then progress to advanced.

Most important, the more you practice in CTFs, the more rapid your progress is!

3rd, when you feel like you have done enough after 6months or 1 year,
Go for a certification.

Make sure to build connections via LinkedIn, to land a job.

Although, this guide is kinda incomplete and may differ coz its works roughly for red team hacking.

I said that considering the people who have enough skills and competence to back those.
Skill speaks mostly for good jobs and not qualifications , especially in IT security sector.

During my time on twitter, I met many people, one of them was a medico dropout who transitioned to IT security. He got certifications and all, he landed a job to EU(czechoslovakia, ig).
Many examples were there , the condition is only when you have done projects/certifications/etc.

Fun fact is even school students are into bug bounty hunting(which is gig/freelancing part of security). They earned thousands of dollars through reporting targets.
