Capítulo I
Da imitação de Cristo e do desprezo de todas as vaidades do mundo.
- Aquele que me segue, não andará em trevas (João 8 - 12). Com estas palavras nos exorta Cristo a que lhe imitemos a vida e os costumes, se de fato queremos ser iluminados e livres de toda cegueira do coração. *"Enganoso é o coração , mais do que todas as coisas, e perverso; quem o conhecerá? (Jeremias 17:9)
Meditar na vida de Jesus seja, pois, nossa maior solicitude. - A doutrina de Cristo sobreleva toda a doutrina dos Santos, e quem tiver o Espírito encontrará o maná que nela está escondido. A muitos, porém, acontece que, ouvindo muito o Evangelho, sentem pouco fervor porque lhes falta o espírito de Cristo. Quem quer, porém entender e saborerar toda a plenitude das palavras de Cristo deve se esforçar por moldar nele toda a própria vida.
- Que te aproveita discorrer profundamente sobre a Santíssima Trindade, se não és humilde e, por isso, à Trindade desagradas?
Em verdade as palavras sublimes não fazem o homem santo e justo; é a vida pura que o torna querido de Deus. Prefiro sentir compunção a saber-lhe a definição.
Se souberes toda a Bíblia de cor e todas as máximas dos filósofos que te aproveitaria tudo isso sem o amor e a graça de Deus? Ainda que eu falasse as línguas dos homens e dos anjos, e não tivesse amor, seria como o metal que soa ou como o sino que tine.
E ainda que tivesse o dom de profecia, e conhecesse todos os mistérios e toda a ciência, e ainda que tivesse toda a fé, de maneira tal que transportasse os montes, e não tivesse amor, nada seria.
E ainda que distribuísse toda a minha fortuna para sustento dos pobres, e ainda que entregasse o meu corpo para ser queimado, e não tivesse amor, nada disso me aproveitaria.

Vaidade de vaidade! É tudo vaidade (Eclesiastes - 1,2), exceto amar a Deus e só a Ele servir.
A suprema sabedoria consiste em tender para o reino do Céu pelo desprezo do mundo.

Vanity, worrying only about the present life and not foreseeing the future.
Vanity, loving what is so dizzyingly passing and not rushing to the joy that always lasts. - Remember, very much, that sentence of the Sage, the eyes are not satisfied with seeing, nor the ears with hearing (Ecclesiastes 1,8).
Apply yourself, therefore, to detach your heart from the love of the visible things in order to transport you to the invisible, because those who let themselves be carried away by their own sensuality stain their conscience and lose the grace of God.
