If you exhale and hold your exhalation, your heart rate will lower.
Whenever you inhale, pressure on your carotid vein (going to the brain) decreases, and this is registered by your vagus nerve. This causes stimulation of the sympathetic nervous response (fight or flight system) -> increase in heart rate. Whenever you exhale, the opposite happens: the vagus nerve stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest system) -> decrease in heart rate .
So whenever you feel urges or catch yourself edging, exhale deeply and hold for a few seconds
