Romans 8:14-17 (KJV)

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Heirs With Christ

Frances Taylor

Paul, in quoting Jesus, tells us that as children of God we have the right to call God" Daddy." This is what β€œAbba” means, not the more formal Father. We are heirs of heaven so we should not have a spirit of fear. Have you ever thought of what it means to have God as β€œDaddy?” I’d like you to think for a few minutes about what it might feel like. If we were in the same room, I’d ask you to close your eyes for this meditation. Picture your favorite peaceful spot. It may be in your home, or in a part, or as for me, watching the water lap the shore. You sit on a comfortable chair or bench and God comes and sits beside you. He invites you to share with him, all your concerns, worries, fears, all that is bothering you. You pour your heart out to him as he sits smiling at you. There is no judgment in his eyes, only love. Soon, you are finished and wonder what God will say. Instead, he puts his arms around you and tells you how much he loves you. He tells you that he is with you and will help you carry your burdens; you only need to trust him. After a few minutes, he gets up and walks away. Feeling lighter and refreshed, you return to your day, knowing you have a loving forgiving father that will always there when you need to talk to him.

Prayer

Father, you are there watching over us as a loving parent. Help us to remember that we can always come to you when we need to talk and we believe that you will answer us. Amen.

Night Bible Verse of the Day

May 17, 2025 Saturday

Night Scripture

The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.
From: Psalm 34:10 (KJV)

Inspiration

Lions are icons of strength. Yet even a lion, if he is unable to hunt, will grow weak and helpless in due time. Those who trust in the Lord, however, need not hunt, and need not go hungry. God promises to supply our needs and strengthen us each day. He may not shower us with excess, and we may not know today how He will provide for tomorrow, but we can always trust in His faithful promise.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your care. Thank You for watching over my life and supplying all of my needs. As I trust in You, please guard my heart against selfish desires of excess and indulgence. For in You, I always have enough. Teach me to trust You more so that Your strength may be the strength of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Morning Bible Verse of the Day

May 18, 2025 Sunday

Morning Scripture

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.
From: Psalm 136:1,26 (KJV)

Inspiration

Share with all those who wish to rejoice in the God Almighty. It comes with the territory; accept and give thanks to the Lord, and be granted everlasting loving mercy. Give thanks to the Lord, and enter into his Kingdom!

Prayer

Lord God, unworthy as I am, grant me mercy upon earth as in your Heavenly Kingdom. Hear my song of praise to thee, of your goodness and your majesty. Rejoice in your name, your goodness and your grace. Lord God, as wretched a sinner as I am, I give thanks to thee, for showing me the divine light and mercy. Father above, I rejoice. I rejoice in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Romans 8:26-27 (KJV)

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

The Spirit Knows Our Needs

Frances Taylor

There are times in our lives when we may not know how to pray. Perhaps there is someone who is very ill and may die. We want them to live but we don’t want them to suffer and so we’re not sure what we should ask God for. We feel guilty thinking about asking for death and selfish asking for life. What to do? Sometimes we are so confused and upset that we can’t think of a single prayer.

I once read a story about a woman who grew up memorizing prayers but didn’t realize that she could use her own words to pray. When she had children, she taught them to talk to God but thought she was doing them a favor by not making them memorize any formal prayers. One day, her son was in a terrible accident and told her that he didn’t know what to pray, and she suggested that he say The Lord’s Prayer, but he told her he didn’t know it. Prayer is an interesting thing. As we can see from this story, it’s not an either or but a both and approach that we need. We need permission to use our own words but it’s nice to know a formal prayer for many reasons, including the ability to pray with the community. I know my mother as a child had to learn the 23rd Psalm in addition to the Lord’s Prayer. And my introduction to prayer was using my own words, but my parents made sure I knew both. It’s also good to know that when all we can do is cry out in pain, the Holy Spirit will take over and provide what we need.

Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for taking such good care of us so that you know what is in our hearts as well as knowing what is best in any situation. Amen.

Night Bible Verse of the Day

May 18, 2025 Sunday

Night Scripture

I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.
From: Isaiah 43:11 (KJV)

Inspiration

Our God is the one and only God. And because of this, our God is our one and only Rescuer. There is no path to salvation that we can make for ourselves apart from Him. Only the path that He made for us will lead us to where He is. So let us walk this path with mindfulness, knowing that no other will save us.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for showing me the way to salvation. Even more, thank You for making the way. Without You, I was lost, but because of You and am saved. Keep me near to You and teach me Your ways so that I may walk more closely with You, and not wander aimlessly on paths of foolishness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

May 19, 2025 Monday

Morning Scripture

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
From: Romans 8:26 (KJV)

Inspiration

Here Paul tells us that His spirit helps us in our infirmities, that is, our weaknesses. He gives us the strength to bear our weaknesses and gives us truths that help us to endure them. One specific way that the Spirit helps us is by making intercession, when we don’t know how to pray. This is a crucial part of the help that the Spirit gives us. Sometimes we don’t know how to pray. That may be because we don’t know what is best for us, or because we don’t know what God might be willing to do for us. We aren’t sure who God is and we don’t understand His character. We know we are suffering, but we don’t know how to help ourselves. When that happens, we need an intercessor. The Holy Spirit becomes our advocate. He knows how to voice our needs. He reads the recesses of our hearts and transmits that the Father, in a way we cannot. These groanings are often in a heavenly language that only God can understand. It becomes a kind of code that allows our hearts to bypass our minds and go straight to the heart of God. The Holy Spirit becomes our interpreter, translating our deepest needs to the language of God.

Prayer

Father, I thank You for praying for me when I can’t pray for myself. Sometimes I just don’t have the words to express my needs and desires to You. Your Holy Spirit becomes my intercessor and takes my needs directly to You. Thank You for providing Your Spirit to help me when I am in need. Amen.

John 21:15-17 (KJV)

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Do You love Me?

Frances Taylor

In today’s gospel passage, Jesus tells his followers that those who love him will keep his word. We know that his word is to love others as Jesus has loved us.

Love is an interesting word. This past week, our Bible study group spent four days reflecting on the Scripture sayings concerning love, the definition of love in the dictionary, the importance of love, and how we can walk in the way of love. It’s not always easy. We have heard more than once that love is a choice we make, an act of the will, not of the emotions. We are to love our families, friends, our God, but also our enemies. How do you love your enemies? When Jesus laid down his life for us, he didn’t qualify the gift. In fact, he reminded the Pharisees that he came to save sinners. Of course, that includes us even if we don’t want to think about it! Just because we are the ones in church doesn’t make us perfect by any means.

Jesus also promises us that he is sending us help so that we can learn to love better – the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, who is that bond of love between the Father and the Son from all eternity. I’m sure that I have quoted verses from St. Paul before, but if you really want to challenge yourself, reread his First Letter to the Corinthians, chapter 13 – all the verses! – and then use this as a checklist to see how well you are doing. I know I can think of a few verses that I need to work on, what about you?

Prayer

Lord, you know that I love you, but like Peter, I have been weak and have failed. You have forgiven me and now I need your help to show my love in a better way by being more loving in my actions with others. Show me the way. Amen.

Night Bible Verse of the Day

May 19, 2025 Monday

Night Scripture

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
From 2 Corinthians 5:1 (KJV)

Inspiration

In our bodies, we experience aches, pain, and discomfort. And as we age, our bodies groan even more as they grow weary and start to fail us. But God promises that when we are fully united with Him in eternity, we will be equipped with imperishable bodies, not subject to pain, death, or failure. So let us endure our days in this life as we look ahead to the glorious promises of the next life.

Prayer

Lord, I am thankful that You have secured a place for me in eternity. Sometimes, the aches of my body make me long to be free of the trappings of pain and suffering. And I trust in Your promise that one day I will fully know this freedom. So give me the power to persevere in this life, as I move forward with hope in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Morning Bible Verse of the Day

May 20, 2025 Tuesday

Morning Scripture

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
From: Luke 1:76-78 (KJV)

Inspiration

Do you honestly confess to your sins? On the surface of it, it is easier to confess and own up to the largest errors when one has clearly been caught, for these sins are the most blatant and glaring. However for the true follower of Christ, who knows there is no realm which may hide or obscure itself from God’s light, real courage comes in facing the darkest desires of one’s heart, even if they have not yet been committed, or have instead been covered up. In asking for forgiveness not because one is caught, or for fear of retribution, but rather in clearing one’s conscience, in obedience to a moral order of purging one’s heart before one’s maker, this is a mark of the truly faithful, the truly courageous. Evil often stems from weakness, of not being able to look it in the eye fully, or giving it a disguise. With God’s divination, we may trust and find this power to purge it from our souls.

Prayer

Lord Almighty, in your infinite wisdom and glory, you know and see me better than I do mine own self, therefore grant me the courage to face my sins and wicked desires. Let me not give them shelter in secret and in shadow, to harbor their temptations and will, where they may grow stronger; but help me purge them in your light, and cast them out of your Eden in Heaven. Amen.

Acts 14:8-10 (KJV)

And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked:
The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.

The Work Continues

Frances Taylor

Paul has branched out of Judea and into Lystra, where there were more Gentiles than Jews. On the strength of his preaching, both Jews and Gentiles came to believe in Jesus. But, there was also a growing crowd of both Jews and Gentiles who combined to drive him from the area. Paul and Barnabas were driven out but that didn’t stop them from spreading the good news. Missionaries today go into areas where there are people who still need to know that God loves them and has a plan for their lives. They are also similar to Paul and Barnabas that they are sometimes abused, beaten or run out of the country. The world is still a dangerous place for anyone bringing change, especially change that challenges their way of life. Christianity does call for a change in the way the poor are treated and justice is seen as a way of bringing peace. People are still healed though usually with less fanfare. God is still making his presence known. Men and women still are willing to take their chances and work with God’s people to witness the love of God to them. They work on bringing better housing, medical care, education, clean water and so many other necessary things to those in the greatest need to show them in practical ways that their brothers and sisters in Christ have not abandoned them. For those of us who cannot go into the field, we can pray.

Prayer

Lord, your children everywhere need to know of your love for them. May we pray for those whom you have chosen to work in the field. Amen

Night Scripture

Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
From: John 12:44 (KJV)

Inspiration

To believe in Jesus is to believe in God. As Christians, we understand this truth, but this statement is no mere teaching moment. Jesus cries these words out in frustration. Why? Because people who devoted their lives to following God refused to acknowledge Him. But fear kept them silent. So Jesus is calling on them to proclaim what they already say they believe.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times that I have failed to acknowledge You. Give me the boldness and confidence to not be ashamed to proclaim Your name. You have revealed Yourself in Jesus, and I know that this is true. Empower me to live in that truth, so that others may see You and know You too. In Jesus’ name, amen.

May 21, 2025 Wednesday

Night Scripture

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
From: John 16:33 (KJV)

Inspiration

Through Jesus, we as earthly beings have also found a path to overcoming the world. But, the only lasting transcendence is that granted to us by the Lord. Many might try other methods, the most sad and tragic one common today being drugs. Yet, without salvation and the word of the Lord, these attempts are doomed to fail. In the Christian faith we transcend ourselves into more perfect beings, and finally upon our day of reckoning, we transcend our flesh and enter into the eternal Kingdom. Drugs on the other hand allow one only to descend deeper into oneself and one’s own anxieties, only to return to one’s original position. Rather than being truly liberated, one simply plunges deeper into a need to escape. Without God, and one’s spirit, one cannot truly transcend this life, one may merely bore deeper into its illusions.

Prayer

God Our Heavenly Father, I thank you for counting me amongst those of your blessed children, who know your name and wish to sit at the feet of your throne. I pray for those to whom you speak, but are too deaf to listen. May they find inner wisdom and the true path into eternal life; through your divine glory and mercy alone, Amen.

1 John 5:1-3 (KJV)

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Keep the Commandments

Frances Taylor

We who believe that Jesus is the Christ and loves him, loves God the Father as well and the way we show this love is by keeping the commandments. It all goes back to that. Jesus told us he did not come to abolish the commandments, in fact he summed them up in his command to love. No matter where we turn in Scripture the commandments come up. The Israelites kept breaking them and the prophets kept reminding them to turn back to God. The psalms ask forgiveness for breaking them and thanks for God’s forgiveness. John the Baptist calls people to repent because they had forgotten the commandments. Jesus reminds us of their importance and yet we still ignore them. We lie, cheat, steal, covet and basically do what we want and don’t worry about the consequences. I guess we have to decide what loving Jesus and his Father means to us. We know what John says, but! To love like that today is so counter-cultural, we are mocked and scorned as being too pious, or old-fashioned. We’re told to get with it and be like everyone else. Sin is nothing but an out of date concept, to why are we in just as much trouble as those who came before us. Where are today’s prophets? What will make us wise up? When will we begin to live a life of love?

Prayer

Loving and forgiving God, we say we love you, we say we want to follow your Son, but we keep failing. Give us the grace and strength to love as we should. Amen.

Night Scripture

But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
From: Galatians 3:23 (KJV)

Inspiration

As Christians, we are saved by faith, and not by observing the ceremonial law of the Old Testament. Just as a parent must oversee a child’s life until the child matures and is ready to live on his own, the law was given to prepare us and train us for salvation that comes through faith. So the customs of the law are useful for a time, but full maturity in faith is our long-term objective.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me to a new life in You. Please help me to live by faith. As I read Your word, give me wisdom to see how all of scripture points to You so that I may know You more fully. Grow me in my knowledge of You so that my faith may be mature and I may serve You better. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
From: Galatians 5:6 (KJV)

Inspiration

In the earliest of times, in which God sought to form a covenant with His people, Abraham was ordered to circumcise himself as well as his slaves and descendants. Whilst this was a crucial step in the Old Testament for which God sought a symbol of his chosen people, in the New Testament we see his message and mercy extending to all of mankind through his blessed Son Jesus Christ. Whomever one is, wherever one is from, rejoice! For the word of God is open to all!

Prayer

Lord in Heaven above, I thank you for your grace and glory, shone through upon all of mankind. Send my prayers to all those who know your name, but also those who are yet to be welcomed into your truth in light. For your love dwells within the heart of men, all men, forever and ever, Amen.

And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

All Are One

Frances Taylor

Wouldn’t it be great if we lived this way! No one better than another, no prejudice, no discrimination, all the same! Unfortunately we seem to live in an β€œus” and β€œthem” world. If you look like me and speak the same language you’re one of us, if not, you are one of them. Think about what the world would look like if we only had green trees, green grass and green flowers. No reds, yellows, blues, purples; no trees that changed color in the fall, nothing but green! It would be pretty boring. What about only one tone of sound? No scale of notes, just one sound. How would we enjoy a world without music? We look at the beautiful nature around us, we listen to the birds chirp and the sounds of nature and we are amazed at God’s glory in creation. Why is it that we don’t appreciate seeing the beauty of God in all the faces he made??? We are not a one note world, neither is our planet limited to one color of face. In order to see the face of God, we need to turn to one another in the variety of colors around us as well as the face we see in the mirror and say, Thank you for showing me the face of the living God.

Prayer

We are one in you Lord; let us never forget that we only have to turn and look at our neighbor to see your face. Amen.

And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.
From: Exodus 3:14 (KJV)

Inspiration

God said β€˜I Am that I Am.’ What a powerful name! For only God exists in and of Himself. Of course, we exist, too. But we were created, existing only because God willed it so. But existence is inherent in God’s nature. He has no beginning and no end. He was, and is, and will always be. And when we meditate on the name β€˜I Am,’ we are reminded of just how magnificent our God is!

Prayer

God, You are the great I Am. There was none before You, and there will be none after You. You are the Alpha and Omega. I praise You for Your infinite power, and I thank You for creating me. And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
From: Luke 12:11-12 (KJV)

Inspiration

Speaking up for the Lord is not always easy to do. Today, Christians still face prosecution from many sides, under the duress of governments, one’s society, in the media, or even within one’s workplace or school. But trust in the Holy Spirit to speak up in the face of ridicule, hostilities, or tyranny. Jesus promises to be there in the hour of our need; we may not have all the answers, but we will be provided for, we are not alone.

Prayer

Lord God guide me through the challenges of others to our faith, and grant me your wisdom and words against all who seek injury. Give me over to your will in defending our faith, and stay with me in the hour of my need. Help me help others see the way towards your truth and your salvation, Amen.

2 Corinthians 3:1-3 (KJV)

Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?
Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

Living Letters of Faith

Frances Taylor

Paul is calling these Corinthians β€œliving epistles” or living letters filled with the Spirit of God. How does Christianity spread? In the early days of the church, Paul, Peter and the other apostles went from village to village from Jerusalem to Rome, to Greece and Asia Minor, to Ethiopia and beyond. They told the story of Jesus and the Good News of salvation. If it had ended there, we would not be Christians today. The witness of those converted to Christianity interested others enough to want to know more about this new faith. And so it continues today. Research has discovered that more people are drawn to a faith by the witness of the lives of people than by doctrine. Think about how you go about making friends. What draws you to a person? It can’t be what you know about him or her because you just met. It is their smile, the way they welcome you? Whatever it is, you want to know more about them. It’s the same with Jesus. Until we meet him, we aren’t interested in learning about him. The best way to meet him is in the lives of those who follow him. Living epistles!

Prayer

Lord, let me be a living letter of faith to others. Help me to bring others to know you by the testimony of my life Amen.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
From: Matthew 5:4 (KJV)

At times, we all go through mourning. We lose loved ones, relationships, or even jobs and find ourselves weighed down by grief. Jesus promises that when we mourn, He will be there to comfort us. Grief and sadness subside in their time, but it is assuring to know that in the midst of them, we are not alone, as God himself remains near and weeps with us.

Prayer
