I shall answer this question. People might think that I am from India so I would be biased towards the tiger, but actually, in India, both the tiger and lion are respected.
However, let me tell you this: If at all a tiger and a lion get into a fight, there is going to be a minimum 80% chance that the tiger would win. Let’s come to the reasons.
Compare a lion and a tiger.
MUSCLE: Tiger: 72.6% while Lion: 58.8%. Clearly, the tiger is much stronger. Muscle translates to pure strength.
WEIGHT: It is no secret that a tiger is heavier compared to a lion. Weight might not really matter if it is an African Lion vs Bengal Tiger, because Bengal Tiger is only 10 to 20 kilo heavier, however, it does play a role if it is African Lion vs Siberian Tiger.
FEROCITY: A tiger is more ferocious than a lion. It is not only evident from their furious face, but also during fights, the tiger leaps for the throat straightaway. Lion doesn’t do that. Moreover, if there is no escape route, then the tiger shall kill the opponent by hook or crook. Once a tiger has decided to kill, nothing can deter it.
AGILITY: Lion is a totally lazy cat. It sleeps for a minimum 20 hours and maximum 22 hours. It also rarely hunts on its own. It keeps away from water bodies most of the time and also doesn’t climb trees. Tigers sleep for a minimum of 18 hours, but its no secret that they’re great walkers. They walk several miles everyday touring their territory, are great swimmers and might swim more than 3 30 km during summers. They also climb trees, more regularly in India, at least. And it hunts difficult prey on its own. Lion can’t even hunt a mere African bison on its own, while a Bengal Tiger can hunt the much larger and dangerous Indian gaur all alone. Clearly with so much exercise, the tiger has not only stronger muscles, but also more agility and flexibility.
COURAGE: Now this is something debatable. Lions are known to be courageous and tigers as cowards, but that is a terrible misconception. In fights, when you see a tiger retreating, it doesn’t mean it wants to run away. It means that the tiger is planning carefully on how to fight. Animal experts agree that tigers are master planners while fighting. Actually, as a rule, tigers avoid fights. It wouldn’t even fight a mere cheetah (the weakest among big cats). But once they know that the opponent isn’t going to give up, they fight like demons. Animal experts also agree that tigers learn the fighting skills and tactics much quicker than a lion. A lion is brave no doubt, but it has higher chances of attacking blindly. The tiger is smart enough to take advantage of this. (Although a Bengal Tiger is much more courageous than a lion can ever be, I am talking about all tigers in general, who do not show courage unless provoked).
INTELLIGENCE: Again a debatable topic but not as much as the “courage” part. Most animal experts agree that the tiger is more intelligent. It learns about survival quickly as compared to a lion. Lion is more of a wrestler, tiger is more of a boxer, although this shall really not make much difference.
WILL TO FIGHT: The lion scores in this category. If provided an escape route, a tiger will just escape (not a Bengal Tiger, though. But generally speaking, a tiger shall just escape). However, if the fight is in a confined area, then the tiger becomes a formidable fighter. It shall fight like a demon. So this will to fight depends on the type of arena, a closed one or an open one.
STATISTICS:
- In the Roman Empire, Bengal tigers were compelled to fight African lions, and you won’t believe, that the tiger had a win rate of over 95%.
- In 1909, in Coney Island Animal Show, a powerful lion was set upon a chained tiger. In spite of the heavy metallic chain, the tiger mangled the lion to death.
- There have been till now 1902 cage fights, out of which tigers won 1732 and lions won a poor 170.
- Even kings in India conducted these fights. If history interests you, then you would like to know that the great Mughal king Akbar staged many such fights, always bet on the lion and lost a HUGE lot of money.
Now do you understand why tiger is superior to a lion?
